Review: FALLEN SON, DARKEST NIGHT by Melissa A. Petreshock

After four millennia of waiting for change, the Mother Goddess sees no other recourse but to summon Theo Pendragon to perform his sacred duty as one of the Dracopraesi, imprison her only son in the Underworld, and save her people.

Given the vast destruction Dante has caused in the Earthen Realm, Theo is prepared to fulfill Dana's request without hesitation, but when confronted with unexpected events and a plea for mercy, will the dragon find him worth redemption, or is it too late for this dark soul to seek forgiveness?

FALLEN SON, DARKEST NIGHT is a short story companion to FIRE OF STARS AND DRAGONS (Stars and Souls Book 1). Three thousand years before Caitriona Hayden is even born, Dante's actions and Theo's decision impact the destiny that awaits them all.

My Review

Fallen Son, Darkest Night is a beautifully written prequel to Petreshock's Fire of Stars and Dragons. I love the author's distinct voice. She has a way of writing descriptively, that makes you really think about what she's saying. I could picture each scene perfectly. If you are a fan of paranormal, definitely give this short story a read!

Excerpt
“Okay. It’s settled. One date.” Lifting his palm, he pressed it against my cheek, holding it there. My skin tingled on contact, burning me in all sorts of ways. “But I think we need to try something out beforehand just to make sure that we know what we’re getting ourselves into.”

“Um, what?” I stiffened, panicking at the possibilities of what he was saying. Sweat formed along the back of my neck, but I couldn’t move to wipe it away.

Fuck. This wasn’t good.

Without warning, he pressed his mouth against mine, taking my heart, body, entire soul by complete surprise. Ky captured me in all the ways a woman wanted to be captured by a man.

And oh, what a damn delicious capture it was.

I’d always wondered what it’d be like to kiss this boy. And it wasn’t because I saw him in that sort of light growing up either, just simple curiosity, to say the least But whatever preconceived notions I had about awkwardness and painful teeth clashing went out the window the moment his tongue pressed against my lips.

Holy hell. Now this was a kiss.

His fingers, strong and sure, tangled in my hair, releasing my ponytail with the flick of his thumb. Damn, he was good. My hair fell over my shoulders, shadowing my cheeks, as well as his. I scooted forward, pressing my hands onto the bareness of his neck, tracing the lines of his muscled skin on his shoulders like I’d wanted to do since I first got him in the room with me. I moaned, embarrassingly loud because yeah, this was beyond any kiss I’d ever experienced in the past. Slow, agonizing, and perfect. Ky made the act of kissing as sensual as having sex in a steamy shower. Not that I’d ever actually experienced hot, steamy shower sex or anything. But um, yeah, it was definitely on my bucket list.

Love At The
End of days
The Apocalypse is coming…
are you ready?

Romance and zombies collide in the riveting sequel to Love in the Time of the Dead.

Year four into the Dead outbreak that ended the world and Vanessa Summers has been so burned by love, she swears she will never trust a man again. But Sean Daniels, guard leader of Dead Run River, isn’t just any man. When past lovers return to the colony, things get complicated. Desperate to rid herself of the heartache, Vanessa signs up for a supply run that will test her mettle as a guard in training. Danger comes from all sides as they scavenge Dead infested cities, and as her attraction for Sean deepens, Vanessa finds her head and heart at war with each other. He clouds her judgment, and any misstep could spell disaster outside of the safety of colony gates.
A race back to Dead Run River could save a team mate’s life, but trouble has been brewing back home. Laney Landry, the woman who broke Sean’s heart, is in trouble, and Vanessa must decide whether to take back the Denver colony beside the man she’s falling in love with, or bow out of an attraction that terrifies her.
Weathering Dead hybrids, betrayals, battles, jealousy, and soul consuming love, Vanessa must find her place in the team she’s found. And if she can, she might just master survival at the end of days.

Cover Reveal: Project REUTSway Anthology

I'm so excited to share this cover with you today!!! Last year I participated in a writing contest sponsored by REUTS Publications and my story, THE UGLY GAME, was chosen for their anthology. My story is a mash-up retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen and The Ugly Duckling, but with shifters! As in, there's a wereswan and a werereindeer and...

SHUT UP! I AM NOT WEIRD.

Okay, fine. I'll own it. But seriously, I'm excited for this anthology!

FAIRLY TWISTED TALES FOR A HORRIBLY EVER AFTER will release on Halloween (the same day as BRUTAL!!!).

Now check out this blurb:

When it comes to fairy tales, there are plenty of things that go bump in the night. Things so morbid and grotesque, so sinister and diabolical, they haunt your imagination; warnings from generations past that still manage to terrify.

In 2013, authors came together for the annual Project REUTSway writing competition, penning their own interpretive twists on stories we're all familiar with. Seventeen were chosen, bringing twenty-five new versions to life. From The Brother's Grimm, to Hans Christian Andersen and beyond, these tales are not the ones you grew up with. They are, however, Fairly Twisted Tales for a Horribly Ever After. Dare to find out what happens when "once upon a time" ends in the stuff of nightmares?

The 2013 organization was Reading Tree/Discover Books, a “green” charity which promotes literacy in the US by keeping books out of landfills, funding library sustainability, providing books to low-income families, and more.

For the 2014 season, we’re giving you the chance to decide where proceeds will go! The new year also brings with it a new theme. So brush up on your histories, legends, and cultural lore, because we’ll be looking for the most original, fantastic versions of tales that have braved the centuries.

Book Blitz: DARK CARNIVAL

The air has grown crisp - October is here. With October comes autumn leaves, apple cider, and the siren call of The Dark Carnival.

Will you answer its call? Will you heed the beckon?

The doors are opening.

Will you leave with your life?

Blurb: In this anthology, several authors and illustrators explore the dark and hidden dangers that lie within a carnival that has come to town. But it is no ordinary carnival. It's The Dark Carnival.

And when The Dark Carnival comes to town, there's no promise that anyone can leave...alive.

Add it to your shelves - horror, anthologies, and thriller are good places to start.
Did you say you have more love? Pin the shiny new cover to Pinterest, send out some tweets, and scribe it into Facebook. You never know - show The Dark Carnival enough love, and it might just let you leave.

Excerpt:
“Don’t let what’s on the outside fool you, babe.” He cooed, close enough that my heart began to thud erratically. “It’s the inside you have to be afraid of.”
“Whatever.” I said with a laugh. “I bet it’s all cheese and clich├ęs.” He didn’t seem perturbed by my remark instead he followed without hesitation as I made my way up the four metal steps and into the mouth of the beast.
Despite the carnival being closed for the night, the low neon lights of the house of horror buzzed on. They lit the hallway in pockets, showing four doorways along the length. Excitement filled me like air in a balloon. I had never been one to shy away from the jeepers creepers or a good horror flick. The unknown, whether good or bad, was an intriguing topic I didn’t mind exploring.
